Mental Health And Illness

Mental health refers to our psychological, emotional and behavioural wellbeing. Good mental health, according to the WHO, is the state of wellbeing in which a person realizes his/her potentials, has the ability to cope with the usual stresses of everyday life and live a product life in the society.

It may also be simply defined as the ability to love and relate. When you have psychological ill health you are unable to function well at home and/or at work. In the USA, a study found that one in every five persons has a current mental health condition.

It is estimated that one in four persons would experience a mental health condition in their life time. In addition, mental health conditions have a large global burden of disease associated with them. It is important to know that most mental illnesses start in childhood and adolescence.

Common mental conditions are mood disorders (depression and bipolar), anxiety disorders, psychotic and personality disorders. Others include, eating disorders, sleep problems, hyperactivity and memory difficulties. Some people mis-using certain drugs and psychoactive substances may become addicted to these substances.

Symptoms of mental illness may include feeling stressed, worrying, having negative and/or depressive thoughts, not being able to sleep properly, having hallucinatory experiences, delusions (false beliefs not based on objective reality), problems with concentration and memory, unusual emotional outbursts and sometimes exhibiting violence towards self and/or others. Addictive behaviors like uncontrolled substance use.
